Situated at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley, where the sweeping Bunyoro escarpment meets vast, palm-dotted savanna, lies the Murchison Falls National Park. Established as a game reserve in 1926, this conservation area is the largest and oldest in Uganda, boasting a diverse array of wildlife, including 76 species of mammals and 451 species of birds. The park is traversed by the Victoria Nile, which cascades 45 meters over the remnant rift valley wall, forming the breathtaking Murchison Falls – the park’s centerpiece and the culmination of an 80-kilometer stretch of rapids. The falls mark the point where the river loses its energy, transforming into a wide, tranquil stream that meanders quietly across the rift valley floor before emptying into Lake Albert. This stretch of the river is renowned for its incredible wildlife sightings, with frequent visitors to the riverbanks including elephants, giraffes, and buffaloes. Hippos, Nile crocodiles, and a variety of aquatic birds are also permanent residents, making this one of Uganda’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles.
